Help Out A Great Press & Author

Posted in Announcements on November 8, 2013 by brandonlayng

Dark Regions Press and Joe R. Lansdale could use your help and you only have a couple days left to give. DRP has a new line of psychological horror novels coming out under their Black Labyrinth imprint. These books are published with the utmost quality in mind and with amazing artwork by Santiago Caruso.

To help fund this project, they’ve begun a Kickstarter campaign at

There are only a few days left but even a dollar pledge is a big help at this point because they are 95% complete with the campaign ending November 10th, 2013.

It’s things like this that keep the smallpress alive.

Please help out in any way you can. If you’re like me and super strapped for cash, at least spread the word — on your blog, on twitter, on facebook, or any other social media you’re connected to.

They have great rewards for pledgers, including e-book copies of the first book in the series, “The Walls of the Castle” by Tom Piccirilli, a great read (I hope to review it soon when I have a second to do it justice) and one of my favorite writers.

Give cash, give your word of mouth, either way go forth and help out the small press to keep our fiction fresh and vital.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done one of these. It’s not my fault, honestly, I’ve been very, very, very, busy. Guilt is a powerful emotion. I haven’t had the time lately to contact the regular people, I contact for a thing such as this, so guilt has driven me to search out the info myself by invading their websites and blogs, scavenging for info on what the future holds.

GRAVESIDE TALES: Okay this one isn’t so hard. I’m on their site all the time, since I run the newsletter and my own novel Angel’s Crossing is sponsored by GST (psst! You can sign up to receive my e-serial at by joining The Gravesider mailing list). October marked the release of two great books from GST: Huffer by Michael J Hultquist and Carnival of Fear by JG Faherty.

SCOTT NICHOLSON’S Disintegration is now available! Scott Nicholson explores the bonds of family and the history that is sometimes best left in the past in his newest psychological thriller. Find out more, click here

TOM PICCIRILLI has a new book to keep an eye out for in early 2011, The Last Kind Words will be released by Bantam Books. In the meantime slake your thirst for his fiction by picking up a copy of Shadow Season. To find out more, click here

My flash piece, “The Last Concert” is up at Tales of the Zombie War. I had a great time writing it and I’d like you to have a great time reading it. Even when the dead rise and begin eating people Rock and Roll will never die. It’s a free concert so head on over and enjoy the show.

I’d love it if you left a comment to let me know what you thought of it.

Monster Fight Surprise!

Posted in Announcements, Free Fiction, News with tags , , , , , , on July 6, 2010 by brandonlayng

Thank you to everyone who voted in the recent “Who’s Your Favourite Monster?” poll. The winner by 3% was the Serial Killers. As a show of my appreciation for everyone who voted, I’m writing a fiction piece to describe how the fight went down. Follow the Serial Killer as he battles his way to the top as supreme monster. You’ll find the story in my sidebar under “The Monster Killer”. When each part is completed it will be added to the page, so make sure to check back often or subscribe to the blog for updates.

Part One is the Serial Killer vs Frankenstein’s Monster.

You’ll also find that there is a new fight going on in the Polls section. “Who’s your Favourite MOVIE monster?” Stop by and vote for your favourite to win. At the end I will do up another surprise as the Serial Killer battles the winning Movie monster. Percentage points will determine the Ultimate Winner!

I know it’s been a while since my last Announcements posting. Been tied up; bound with twist-tie ropes and gagged with fresh tampons soaked in pickle juice. Now that’s an image. As per usual I’ve compiled a brief set of postings of new material available from writers and publishers I’ve come to respect and trust to provide quality work. At the bottom, I’ll list a few of my own things available for your current consumption.

Ray Garton: Scissors a crazy psychological horror novel. The titular* theme of the book is disturbing to most men and though women may find it giggle-worthy at first will soon be shivering alongside their spouses as they read. Available from most bookstores. Read the Spine Busters’ review at

Order Scissors

Douglas Clegg: Neverland available now in most bookstores and online. I am currently reading this one and should have the review ready in the next week or so. Written in Clegg’s disturbing gothic ghost story style, this coming of age story revolves around summer vacation for a young boy and his siblings who are initiated into the mysteries of a rundown shack with its dark inhabitant who they come to worship. The volume itself is a beautiful work of publishing with astounding artwork inside. It’s affordably priced and worth the buy just to hold it in your hands. Clegg also has extra content on his site that enriches the reading experience. I encourage everyone to sign up for his newsletter. It’s a great way to get access to free e-books by this suspense master, as well as upcoming news, contests and games.

Order Neverland

Douglas Clegg’s Website:

Nate Kenyon: Sparrow Rock should be available by the time you read this. I’ve yet to be disappointed in anything I’ve read from Mr. Kenyon. Which means I can’t wait to get a copy of this one for myself. I want to learn what dark things lurk in the shadows of Sparrow Rock. Pick up a copy. It’ll be worth the read.

Order Sparrow Rock:

Jack Ketchum: According to his Twitter postings. Next month Leisure Books will be re-releasing Joyride with the novella Weed Species. Available now is his book, Cover, which you can find both online and at most bookstores.

Order Joyride/Weed Species

Tom Piccirilli/Shroud Publishing: All You Despise (Limited Edition Hardcover) this is a second printing of the rare collectible novella by noir horror talent Tom Piccirilli, whose witty and disturbing prose makes his work something entertaining and worth shivering over for days afterward. The print-run this time is only 50 signed copies with a foreword by Brian Keene and illustrations by Alex McVey.

David Dunwoody: Empire is now available at most bookstores in a slick Trade Paperback version. Just picked up my copy the other day and would be reading it already if Clegg’s Neverland hadn’t smelled so good. I’m excited to tear into it though and you should be too. It’s a great value for this volume.

Order through his site:

Now onto me I guess.

Another of the Poppa M’s Bedlam Tales is up over at the New Bedlam E-zine. Head on over to to have a read and get into the season with a buggy tale called Spring Fever.

For those of you who need more bug love read my short story Can of Worms and many other crazy tales by a lovely bunch of people by picking up a copy of Courting Morpheus from Belfire Press It’s available in a gorgeous trade paperback at an affordable price. Other authors include: M.R. Sellars, Geoffrey Girard, Angela Gray, Louise Bohmer, Bruce Barber, Camille Alexa, Ann Tupek, Jeff Parish, Kevin J. Hurtack, Donna Shelton and David de Beer, edited by Jodi Lee with a foreword by Alethea Kontis.

FREE STUFF! I’m giving away free stuff for stalking me on Twitter (not actually stalking, that’s a crime, replace stalking with “following”). I’ve pledged myself with tweeting everyday until year end and I’m hoping to get to 666 Stalkers (followers) by that time. To say thank you to those already tracking my tweets and to those who want to start, I’m sending out pdf copies of my short story Movie Night which originally appeared in the Darkened Horizons: Halloween Special Edition. Plus if you recommend to a friend, you can get a second gift simply by having them DM me your name on Twitter. Movie Night is my ode to 80’s horror classics like A Nightmare on Elm St. But with my own twisted impression. You know you want it. Plus it’s easy to get.

Enough for now. New Announcements soon I hope.

Want some FREE gifts?

Posted in Announcements, Free Fiction, News with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 5, 2010 by brandonlayng

A while back I jumped on the bandwagon after a publisher’s recommendation and I joined the Twitter craze. I was off again/on again with it. Now I’ve decided to try and tweet everyday until the end of the year. See if I can meet this self-imposed challenge. It’s a good way to keep updated on what’s happening in my writing life, updates on the site and reviews on my brother site Spine Busters. Plus there are always the random rants tainted with amusing sarcasm and occasional wit.

I want to sweeten the deal to encourage followers to join me. So here’s what I’m a gonna do.

Go to and add me to the list of people you are following. Then send me a direct message with your e-mail address and let me know if you’d also like to be included in my newsletter list. I will then send you One FREE GIFT! You receive the gift regardless of signing up for the newsletter or not.

Want a second gift? Okay. Get a friend to follow me on Twitter, have them send a direct message to me with the same particulars in the message, plus your Twitter screen name and I will send them One FREE GIFT and you a Second FREE GIFT. Be sure to let them know that they can receive a second gift themselves by recommending a friend to follow me on Twitter as well.

It would be incredibly awesome if I could get to 666 followers before the year’s end. So what do you say, want to join me on the journey? If you’re already following me on Twitter you can get these gifts too. Just follow the instructions and I’ll send you a free gift, recommend a friend and I will send you the second gift as well.

Here’s the next round of announcements. But before that I want to remind everyone about the contest I’ve been holding to win a chance to be a character in my novella, SURVIVE. There have been a lot of people stopping in at the New Bedlam Project site and a few leaving comments, which is very good but I have only received a few e-mails from people to enter the contest. If you’ve already left a comment on one of the stories, send me an e-mail telling me which one, with your full name and e-mail address. Even if you are not interested in being the character it would make a great gift to someone. What’s better thing to brag about than being there when the world ended? So check out the Contest post and get entering.
